Cake Smash Prep Guide

Your Cake smash session…

Planning your little one’s cake smash is exciting. At Mary Purdy Photography we pride ourselves in offering unique one-of-a-kind cake smash setups for children of all ages. Celebrating Birthdays and Milestones is something we all look forward to. Each session is carefully designed with your little one in mind. With children, the days are long, but the years are short - make sure you've captured these beautiful moments before they're gone. All I ask of you is that you give me an idea of a theme or color pallet you would like, and I will do my magic. Please keep in mind, especially with babies, sometimes nothing goes as planned!  Try to go with the flow, you never know what amazing photos you might get!

VERY IMPORTANT!

Please look over your package info in entirety. Unless specified I am not willing to modify packages.

The Studio

My quaint little studio is all of about 224 sq ft. I ask that anyone attending the session stay behind me or next to me to keep your little one’s focused on the camera. For all those beloved images with great eye contact.

Upon arrival, please reach out to me via text to ensure I am ready for you I will let you know if I’m ready

Session Length

Cake Smash session usually lasts about one hour. All Cake Smash sessions with Mary Purdy Photography are done in three parts. Pre cake smash images, cake smash images, and tub clean up images. I ask that you allow up to 1.5 hours for the Signature package for some breaks in between and outfit changes. We don't want to rush your Cake Smash experience.

Parent pictures/ Sibling Images

I love parent and sibling moments. Unfortunately, my cake smash set ups are designed for only the child modeling the session. Twins and multiples are the exception. Due to limited space and the attention to detail I put into my cake smash sets. Family style posing is not possible. I hope you’ll understand.

Preparing for your Session

What should my child wear?

You are always welcome to utilize my client closet for any of your bookings. However please reach out to me and communicate the type of outfit you would or would not want so I can make sure I have something that fits your little one perfectly in the style you are looking for.

*Please keep in mind that anyone helping with the cake smash may end up covered in cake by the end of the session. I highly recommend wearing clothing you don’t love.

What do I need to bring Check List

The only things that you need to bring is:

  • Your Child

  • Small snacks for children 3 and under. Sometimes it happens that your little one will be disinterested in the cake. Especially if this is their first experience with cake or lots of sweetness.  Bring along a few of your child’s favorite small snacks, such as cheerios, puffs, berries, goldfish etc, that can be stuck in the icing (out of view of the camera).  This may entice your little one to start sticking their hands in the cake just to get at the familiar snacks.  That may be enough to get the (cake) ball rolling

  • Plenty of diapers and extras whips (extra wipes to clean your baby off after the cake smashing and before the tub. The tub water can become slippery with added icing).

  • If there is a toy, song, video your little one loves please be prepared to use these items. This can not only help get their attention but calm them down if its needed.

  • Some type of cup, bottle, or if the baby is breast fed that is also ok.

  • I provide towels, a washcloth, and Aquaphor soap during tub time. If you would like to bring your own, please do so.

  • Any sentimental items we are including in your little one’s session or an outfit if you would like to bring one yourself (please notify me ahead of time of what this item might be)
